Students wishing to confer with the instructor at other
times may make arrangements at the end of the lecture
period or by Email. (Telephone ok but not encouraged.)
Lecture: 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. MWF in Lecture Room 2 (LR2) of Van Allen Hall

Eighth Edition
Registration: Changes in course registration including adding, dropping
and section changes, MUST be made by the secretary in
room 203 VAN.
Homework: Problems will be assigned every day and collected in class on Wednesday.
Three problems from each set will be chosen at random and graded.
Circle the problem numbers and put a box around the final result
for each problem. Show all work,for ANY credit to be
given. Write your name and section number at the top on the
front, and STAPLE the pages together to avoid losing pages.
Laboratory: The labs will be held under the supervision of your teaching
assistant, who will also grade homework and laboratory
reports. Discuss the grading of your assignments with your
TA.
Exams: Three mid-term exams will be given during the semester,
as shown on the syllabus. The lowest midterm is dropped.
The final exam is comprehensive. All exams are closed book.
No formulae are given.
Course Grade: Mid term exams 20% each (drop the lowest)
Homework 20% (drop the lowest HW grade)
Labs 15% (drop the lowest Lab grade)
Pop Quizzes 5%
Final exam 20%
Discussion 5% (bonus)

Tutoring:
Teaching Assistants are available for free tutoring in room
54 VAN during the hours posted. While you are strongly
encouraged to seek help from the TA's and the instructor,
do not expect them to do your homework for you.
Posting of Solutions:
Selected Homework solutions will be posted outside LR1 a few
hours after the problems have been collected.
When to seek help at the tutorial room:
Homework: When you don't understand how to work a
homework problem. Do not expect them to work it for you,
but do expect them to choose a similar problem and explain
it to you.
Exams: If you do not understand the posted solutions.
Physics: If you have any difficulty understanding any of
the physical concepts presented in the course, please feel
free to visit the tutorial room.
When to seek help from the instructor (during office hours please)
Homework: When you are unable to work a problem or
when you don't understand a solution that has been posted.
Exams: All questions about grading.
Physics: If you have any difficulty understanding any of
the physical concepts presented in the course, please feel free
to visit the instructor.
During office hours you are welcome and encouraged to discuss
any physics problems you have.
When to seek help from your TA (rather than the instructor). If you
are not then satisfied, bring the HW to the instructor.

Any student needing special accomodations is urged to
contact the instructor and he will gladly work with you. For

The instructor will notify the student in writing soon after
the incident is detected. The instructor will then decide, in
consultation with the DEO, whether to reduce the grade on the
assignment/exam, the grade in the course or give an F in the
