Staff Awards

Staff members receiving awards include Juliana Dowell, Joseph Groene, Kathy Kurth, James Phillips, Christine Stevens and Ron Vogel.

Juliana Dowell, Senior Programmer Analyst, and Joseph Groene, Senior Programmer Analyst, were recognized for 10 years of service in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Kathy Kurth, Secretary III, also received a longevity award from the University for 25 years of service.

Christine Stevens, Clerk IV, received the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Mary Louise Kelley Staff Excellence Award for her work creating a new human resources system for the Department. The training materials she developed for a new TA/RA reappointment process were also presented to other support staff in the College. She provided training sessions and was the main contact for other departments implementing the new process.

Ron Vogel, Lab Coordinator, received an Improving Our Workplace Award (IOWA) for redesigning physics lab experiments for 1000 undergraduate students, through use of the latest technology and an apparatus which he designed. He also worked with physics and engineering students to find ways to make the exercises more interesting.

Staff Changes

Over the past year, many changes have taken place in the Department with staff retiring or leaving, new people being hired, and staff promotions as well.

The Department says good-bye to Michael Rocca (Senior ERD Machinist) who retired this year. Others who have left the Department include Robert Barrie (Technical Services Supervisor), Niels Otani (Research Scientist), and Steven Remington (Senior Engineer).

Physics and Astronomy also welcomes several new appointed staff members: Larry Detweiler (Senior ERD Machinist), Carol Preston (Program Assistant), and Joanne Seeberger (Research Assistant II).

Staff Promotions

Several people were promoted to new positions this past year. Those receiving promotions include: Scott Bounds (Postdoc to Assistant Research Scientist), Ivar Christopher (Research Assistant II to Research Assistant III), Larry Granroth (Senior Systems Analyst to Senior Project Analyst), Chung-Sang Ng (Assistant Research Scientist to Associate Research Scientist), and Volodymyr Nosenko (Postdoc to Assistant Research Scientist).
