New Faces
The past few years have brought many challenges and changes for the department's staff. In 1999, several new people joined the physics and astronomy family. In February, Cheryl Hoogerwerf Reardon became the department's
Administrative Associate overseeing the department's day-to-day administrative functions and working closely with the College of Liberal Arts. In March, Katie Schaub and Chris Stevens came to the department. Katie is the student records clerk. She works with graduate students coordinating their teaching and lab assignments and is also involved in undergraduate recruitment. Chris Stevens is the human resources coordinator, and takes care of all personnel-related matters. They are all extremely qualified and the department is very fortunate to have such talented and experienced staff working for it.
Staff Excellence Award
In September, Robin Paterson, DEO secretary, was one of twelve University staff members given a Staff Excellence Award for 1999. During 1998, when the department lost its administrative assistant to cancer and lost three other staff members in critical areas, Robin overcame great challenges to keep the department running smoothly. Her dedication and work ethic for the department is greatly appreciated.
Alice Shank Retirement
In December, the department will say a sad "good-bye" to long-time employee, Alice Shank. Since 1977 many of you may remember Alice from her many years of working in the department's publications area, typing manuscripts, theses, and camera-ready copies. Her hard work and attention to detail showed in the high quality of the materials she produced. Alice will be missed greatly and we all wish her the best in her well-deserved retirement.
