Society of Physics Students

Society of Physics Students
The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is very busy again this fall organizing activities for undergraduate physics and astronomy majors. SPS meets every other week and this year they are planning 4-5 dinners with professors. Trips to the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois and the Yerkes Observatory at the Univ. of Chicago are also planned. Their goal this year is to bring students and faculty closer for a better learning experience for all involved. Kenneth Gayley, assistant professor of astronomy, is the faculty advisor for SPS. This year's president is Carrie McGivern, a senior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who is working on majors in astronomy and optical physics. To see the latest on SPS activities at the University of Iowa, visit their web site at http://www-astro.physics.uiowa.edu/sps/ and be sure to sign the guestbook when you're there.

Student Enrollment Is Up

Enrollment for undergraduate and graduate students is up this fall. The department has 31 incoming freshmen working toward majors in physics or astronomy, bringing the total number of undergraduate students to 91. This fall sees the addition of 15 new graduate students to the Master's and Ph.D. programs for a total of 52 graduate students (M.S.: 9 students, Ph.D.: 43 students).

Graduate/Undergraduate Awards

The department has many ambitious and dedicated students. The following students were recognized in 1999 for their hard work: Distinguished Achievement Award--Jennifer Sippel; Myrtle K. Maier Scholarship--Anna Tauke; William R. Savage Awards--Louis Datilio, Benjamin Moehlmann; James A. Van Allen Award--Jacqueline Coyne; Goertz/Nicholson Memorial Scholarship--M. Bugrahan Oktay. Recipients of the Shoemaker-Strickler Scholarship include: Joseph Evans (1997-present), Dane Kavars (1997-present), Scott Timmerman (1997-present), Luke Gutzwiller (1998-present), Kristen Lueken (1999), and Christopher Jones (1999). Recipients of the Strayer-Rairden Scholarships are Thomas Cox (1997-present), Ben Rogers (1998-present), and Brian Metzger (1999). The Department of Physics and Astronomy is very proud to have such talented students.
