Main Office
Manual of Operations & Procedures
The Manual of Operations and Procedures is the operating procedures for faculty governance of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The Department shall follow the operating rules of the University and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as delineated in the Operations Manual and the Handbook for CLAS Faculty, and shall follow the Manual's operations and procedures as a supplement thereto. Once approved by the Department and the College, this Manual becomes effective immediately.

Maternity Leave
Under FMLA, a woman may take 12 weeks off for maternity leave. University policy only allows 6 weeks of paid sick leave to be taken unless there are extenuating circumstances. Any additional time for maternity leave will need to be taken as vacation. For more information, see Chris Stevens (214 Van Allen Hall, 5-1690).

Meals
In-state meal reimbursement policy is $31 per day, or for partial days traveled - $6 breakfast, $9 lunch, $16 dinner. For out-of-state travel, it is $40 per day, or for partial days traveled - $8 breakfast, $12 lunch, and $20 dinner. More information on reimbursement of meal expenses can be found here.

Membership Dues and Subscription Fees
These charges are not allowable as a direct cost to a grant or contract as outlined in A-21 regulations. As for membership costs, A-21 regulations say they should normally be considered F&A costs. Institutional membership costs benefit several faculty members, sometimes across departmental or collegiate lines and should normally be paid by the Dean's office or other major academic or administrative unit depending on the type of organization. If there are enough faculty members within an institution that would benefit from affiliation with a scientific organization, then an institutional membership paid for at the department or Dean's level is probably more appropriate. See Andrea Shaevitz (210-B Van Allen Hall) for clarification.

Mentors
The DEO assigns a faculty mentor to each new junior faculty member. The mentor is chosen from tenured faculty who work in either the junior faculty member's research area or in a closely related field. The mentor is expected to provide guidance to the junior faculty member with regard to typical departmental expectations with regard to teaching, scholarly activities, and service and is expected to help him/her develop a plan for excelling in all three areas. The DEO participates actively in this process through frequent informal meetings with the probationary faculty and with the mentors.

Merit Staff
The merit staff is comprised of clerical, technical, blue collar, and security staff. To hire a merit staff person, contact Chris Stevens at 5-1690.

Moving Expenses
Expenses are available to faculty, assistant professors and above, P&S staff paygrade 10 and above, and post docs (with special exceptions). See Aaron Votroubek (211 Van Allen Hall, 5-0134) for more information.
