Governmental Relations
Protocols involving governmental relations should be as follows:
If you should at any time receive an inquiry from, or for any reason discuss University business with, elected officials at the state or federal level, staff, or other political or public officials, please inform the Office of Governmental Relations. If it is an inquiry that requires a formal response, please review the proposed response with this office. Centralized coordination of legislative contacts and responses will help to assure consistency, accuracy and completeness of UI communications with our elected officials and will enable our legislative liaisons to represent the University as effectively as possible.
If you have questions or concerns, contact Derek Willard (Special Assistant to the President for Governmental Relations) or Mark Braun (State Relations Officer). During the session, if you are unable to contact either one, please contact Norine Zamastil at 5-3714 and she will be sure to forward messages on to them. More information on the Office of Governmental Relations can be found here.

Graders
The department will attempt to fulfill requests for graders for the large service courses and for 100 - 200 level courses with enrollments of 10 or more. TA funding is limited and the priority will be given to covering laboratory sections.

Graduate Admission Requirements
For admission to the graduate programs, a Bachelor's degree in physics and/or astronomy is required with a minimum undergraduate record of B. The GRE is required. The minimum acceptable score is not specifically stated. The GRE Advanced Subject (Physics) Test is also required. The minimum is not specifically stated. Students from non-English foreign countries are required to demonstrate proficiency in English via the TOEFL exam. Minimum acceptable score for admission is 550.

Graduate College Block Funds (GCRA)
The Graduate College appropriates funding for each department to award scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships.

Graduate College Postcomprehensive Registration
The student is required to register each semester after passing the comprehensive examination until the degree is awarded. If a student fails to register, the student may not be readmitted to candidacy until the student has submitted an application that has been approved by the student's adviser, the departmental executive, and the Graduate College dean. For more information, view the Graduate College's Continuous Registration Policy.

All registration should accurately reflect the amount and type of work undertaken, the use of University facilities, and the amount of consultation with the faculty. The student should register for the courses, research, and thesis necessary to complete the Plan of Study.
