DEO SELECTION PROCEDURES
Faculty vote to incorporate into Bylaws on October 20, 2000

  1. Determination of the DEO selection committee

    1. The DEO, in consultation with the executive committee, will appoint a committee of senior faculty representing a broad range of interests. The committee must be approved by 2/3 of the voting faculty. If an appointee declines to serve, or excuses his/herself because of conflict of interest, the committee may replace them with another member. Aaron will serve as the staff representative on the committee.

  2. The DEO selection committee solicits:

    1. Nominations of candidates from faculty.
    2. General comments and information from faculty relevant to the DEO search.
    3. Information from the staff. The staff determines its own process for DEO selection and how to bring their feedback to the committee.

  3. The DEO selection committee conducts a straw vote of the faculty to narrow down the list of candidates.

    1. The list of candidates includes all candidates generated by 2.
    2. Each faculty member is entitled to up to one vote per candidate.
    3. The results of the straw poll are secret.
    4. There will be no mechanism to abstain from being a candidate in the straw poll.
    5. Members of the committee who are nominated would excuse themselves from the committee.

  4. The committee will use the straw vote and the other information to make a slate of candidates for consideration. The slate would include all candidates that received a vote from at least half of the voting faculty or the two candidates with the maximal vote totals.
The committee may add additional candidates to the slate based on the information solicited from the faculty and staff and straw poll.

The committee will provide a justification for the final slate of candidates.
  5. The committee will interview the selected candidates. The purpose of this step is to convince the selected candidates to participate in an election. After this stage a candidate may choose to withdraw from the process.

  6. The candidates who are selected by the DEO selection committee and are willing to participate will be provided with a forum to make a statement and answer questions from faculty and staff.

  7. The faculty will vote to determine a candidate to recommend to the Dean. The process will be as follows:

    1. Faculty on the ballot will excuse themselves from the faculty meeting.
    2. There will be a brief discussion about each candidate.
    3. Faculty will be permitted up to one vote for each candidate. The votes will be on written ballots.
    4. The candidates with the two highest vote totals will be identified.
    5. The faculty will vote for one of the top two candidates by majority. The votes will be on written ballots.
    6. The faculty will participate in an affirmation vote of the selected candidate; the name of the nominee and vote total will be forwarded to the Dean.
    7. Individual collegiate ballots will be distributed to the faculty.
