Guidelines for Grant-Related Bridging Funds

To be eligible for grant-related bridging funds, the investigator must have had a history of major external support prior to experiencing an interruption in funding due to an unsuccessful competitive application for continued support.

Important factors in judging the merit of the bridging request will be how well the renewal application was received by the sponsor, and an assessment of the likely success of the revised application.

A revised application to the same or another sponsor must have already been submitted or will be submitted as soon as possible so that bridging support is limited to as short a time period as the review process will allow.

In general, faculty salaries, equipment, and travel will not be eligible for support. Priority will be given to maintaining essential Professional and Scientific or equivalent personnel and minimal necessary supplies.

There must be a strong endorsement from both the department and the college and an indication of significant sharing in the cost of bridging at these levels.

Requests are to be forwarded through departmental and collegiate channels and shall include the following information at a minimum:

  1. the letter requesting bridge funds;
  2. the face, abstract and budget pages of the grant that was reviewed and not funded;
  3. the priority score, percentile and sumniary statement of the grant review or other information that indicates the outcome of the review;
  4. a plan for addressing the reviewers' criticisms of the grant or a copy of the relevant pages of the revised application;
  5. a listing of all recent, current and pending research grants to the investigator;
  6. a list of ftmds available to the investigator in existing research accounts; and
  7. projected research budget for the "bridge" period with details on personnel.
