Professor Van Allen Professor Frank and graduate student Professor Frank and research scientists
Professor Van Allen began our Space research program. His instrument aboard America's first satellite in Earth orbit detected what are now called the Van Allen Radiation Belts. Professor Frank, right, with a student, in a lab with a vacuum chamber used to test instruments by simulating space conditions. Professor Frank, right, with research scientists in his group, examining images of Earths' aurora and atmosphere. The camera, which was built in our department, is on the Polar spacecraft.

Professor Gurnett, left, with a graduate student. His group recently built an instrument for the Mars Express mission, which will attempt to detect water below the surface of Mars. Professor Gurnett and Professor Kletzing, with scientists, engineers, and graduate students involved in the team that built instruments for the Cluster spacecraft.
