| Phonon wake in a two-dimensional lattice, from Professor Goree's group. A moving supersonic disturbance traveling to the left excites phonons with a wavefront that has a V-shape, similar to a Mach cone. This image was featured on the American Physical Society's 2000 calendar. | Valence energy bands as a function of crystal momentum in a semiconductor superlattice, calculated by Professor Flatté's group. This superlattice forms the gain medium of a semiconductor laser diode emitting light of 4.0 microns. Such lasers can be used for detecting environmental pollutants and for monitoring the concentration of chemicals in the human body. | Calculated electron wave functions, from Professor Pryor's group. The wave functions were computed for an InAs/GaAs quantum post, showing the response to an applied electric field. |
