Phonon wake in a two-dimensional lattice Valence energy bands Calculated electron wave functions
Phonon wake in a two-dimensional lattice, from Professor Goree's group. A moving supersonic disturbance traveling to the left excites phonons with a wavefront that has a V-shape, similar to a Mach cone. This image was featured on the American Physical Society's 2000 calendar. Valence energy bands as a function of crystal momentum in a semiconductor superlattice, calculated by Professor Flatté's group. This superlattice forms the gain medium of a semiconductor laser diode emitting light of 4.0 microns. Such lasers can be used for detecting environmental pollutants and for monitoring the concentration of chemicals in the human body. Calculated electron wave functions, from Professor Pryor's group. The wave functions were computed for an InAs/GaAs quantum post, showing the response to an applied electric field.
