  Course Information

  Course Description:
  An introduction to the physics of classical mechanics including kinematics, forces, circular motion, energy, momentum, rotation, gravity, oscillations, fluids, waves, and thermodynamics The course is intended for engineering majors, science majors, and other students with need for an introductory physics course with calculus. We will cover Chapters 1 to 20 in the text at a pace of roughly 2 to 3 chapters per week. This course requires the use of calculus.

  Exams and grading
  Final grades for the course will be based on the following percentages and will be given using plus/minus grading. There will be no make-ups for the one-hour exams except in truly extraordinary circumstances for which the student comes to the instructor before the exam to plan a make-up. Only 9 of the 10 labs will be counted toward grading, however, there will be no make-up labs.
  Homework - 20% Laboratory - 20% Class exams 1 & 2 - 23% each Class exam 3 - 24%
  In Class exams will take place on
• Friday June 27th
• Wednesday July 16th
• Friday August 1st
  Exams will require the use of calculators, no books/notes/equations sheets will be allowed, you will be provided with useful constants such as G. The exams will require short written answers and will not be multiple choice. There will be no practise exams available. Each exam will be based on the two weeks on work prior to the exam, although the exams will not be cumulative it is important to remember that techniques learnt in the first few weeks will reappear throughout the course.

  Laboratory:
  Laboratory is a key part of the course. Lab does not meet during the first week of class the final week of class. Eating and drinking in laboratory is not allowed. Labs take place in Room 353 and Room 361 . The schedule is as follows

• June 30th M3:Projectile Motion and M4:Acceleration, Force and Newton's second law
• July 7th M5:Conservation of Energy M6:Collisions in 2D
• July 14th M7:Moment of Inertia and M9:Simple Harmonic Motion
• July 21st W1:The Speed of Sound and H3:Heat Capacity
• July 28th no labs.

  Homework:
  Homework will be assigned weekly and will be web-based using e-Grade Plus. Individual problems may be repeated as often as desired to achieve full credit. No credit for late homework. Homework will be due every Friday at 5pm. Late submissions of Homework 1 will be accepted.
